The Addison County Solid Waste Management District's HazWaste Center accepts most household hazardous waste for free from residents Monday through Friday, from 8 AM to 2 PM, and on Saturdays from 8 AM to 1 PM year-round. But, how do you know if you have hazardous waste?
Hazardous wastes are products with hazardous ingredients in them. Look for labels with words such as “danger,” “poison,” or “warning” as an indicator of hazardous ingredients. These products should be kept out of household trash.
Common household items that are hazardous:
- Garden supplies such as weed killers, insecticides, fertilizers with weed killer, wood preservatives, or rodent poisons
- Paints and thinners, paint removers, stains and varnishes, epoxies, and adhesives
- Drain openers, oven cleaners, metal or furniture polish, and spot removers
- Gasoline, solvents, brake fluids, transmission fluids, antifreeze, batteries, polishes, and wax
- Mercury-containing devices like thermometers, thermostats, fluorescent light bulbs
- Hair dyes, nail polish, nail polish remover, hair spray, certain hair gels, certain lipsticks, lice shampoo, flea and tick medicine
- Glues, roofing tar, stains, strippers, varnish
- E-cigarettes, unused nicotine patches, lozenges or nicotine gum, inhalers, sprays, cartridges, or refills for nicotine products
- Heating oil & fuels, fishing sinkers, lighters, sterno and canned gel fuel
- Pool chemicals, photo chemicals, chemistry sets, some fabric dyes and pottery glaze
