Scrubbing the winter blues away as we enter the first few weeks of Spring? Here are some tips and tricks to make your spring cleaning sustainable.

Consider using less-toxic cleaning products by DIY-ing cleaners out of simple ingredients. Using fewer and less toxic cleaning products is an easy way to minimize your household hazardous waste. Here are recipes (hyperlink).

Confused about what can be recycled, reused, composted, or thrown out in the trash? The District keeps a frequently updated A-Z Guide detailing how to dispose of hundreds of items. When in doubt, check the A-Z Guide.

If you're clearing your yard and preparing for a summer of gardening, make sure you are handling yard waste properly. Some yard waste can be composted at home or brought to a local drop-off. Loads of leaves, grass clippings, pine needles, garden waste, and other non-woody yard and garden debris are accepted at the District Transfer Station for a small fee. Twigs in the yard waste should be no larger in diameter than a pencil. Bags must be emptied of their contents. Residents may check with their town clerk or the local fire warden for restrictions on open burning of yard waste. Many towns have regulations surrounding the safety of burning, and often a permit must be obtained.

Keep in mind as you clean that certain items are banned from the landfill in the state of Vermont. The following should never go in the trash: paints, stains, varnish, thinner, waste oil and filters, the mandatory recyclables (plastic #1 and #2, glass jars and bottles, aluminum and steel cans, aluminum foil, cardboard, mixed paper, and newspaper), mercury-added products, electronics, organics (including food scraps, coffee grounds, clean wood, and leaf & yard debris), batteries, appliances (white goods), and dangerous or hazardous wastes. The District Transfer Station is open M-F from 7 AM to 3 PM and on Saturdays from 8 AM to 1 PM. Most landfill-banned items can come to the District Transfer Station.
